In a shocking case from Mumbai, a former Managing Director (MD) of the Aditya Birla Group was duped of ₹70 lakh in a sophisticated ‘digital arrest’ scam. The 75-year-old victim was threatened with false allegations of involvement in the Pahalgam terrorist attack and intimidated with fake documents claiming he was under investigation.
The scammers created a sense of fear by impersonating Delhi ATS officials and a police IG, even conducting video calls showing a fake legal arrest process.
The victim was coerced into sharing personal financial information, including bank accounts, fixed deposits, and shares. The fraudsters then convinced him to transfer ₹70 lakh across multiple accounts under the guise of ‘white money’ conversion, using fake RBI receipts sent via WhatsApp to gain his trust.
Mumbai Police’s Cyber Crime Cell has registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and IT Act and is actively investigating. They have seized WhatsApp chats, audio recordings, and bank details, and teams are tracing the suspects.
Authorities have warned citizens to remain cautious of such scams, advising verification of unsolicited calls or video links claiming legal or police actions.
This case highlights the evolving tactics of cybercriminals who exploit digital identities and the fear of legal troubles to swindle large sums. Police stress awareness and vigilance to avoid falling victim to such scams.
