India Is Not Following in AI — It’s Building Across the Full Stack

India should not be seen as a secondary AI player forced to align with either the United States or China. In reality, India belongs firmly in the first league of AI nations because it is building strength across all five layers of the AI architecture: applications, models, chips, infrastructure, and energy.

Progress is visible across each layer. At the application level, India is emerging as one of the world’s largest providers of AI-driven services. Indian enterprises excel at understanding business processes end to end and applying AI to deliver real, measurable outcomes. This layer is where AI succeeds or fails, because true return on investment comes from deployment and impact—not from simply building the largest models.

Contrary to popular belief, AI success does not depend on massive trillion-parameter models. Nearly 95 percent of enterprise use cases can be addressed with models in the 20–50 billion parameter range. India already has a strong portfolio of such models, and they are being deployed across sectors to boost productivity, efficiency, and smarter use of technology.

The national focus is clear: accelerate large-scale AI diffusion so that benefits reach enterprises, industries, and citizens alike. This approach prioritizes practical value over hype and positions AI as a productivity engine rather than a prestige project.

Global benchmarks reinforce this position. According to Stanford, India ranks among the top three globally in AI penetration, preparedness, and talent, and stands second in AI talent alone. By these measures, India clearly belongs in the leading group of AI nations—not a secondary category.

India is not choosing sides in the global AI race. It is charting its own path, grounded in scale, talent, and real-world impact across the entire AI stack.
