LTIMindtree to Halt All New H-1B Visa Applications, Says CEO

LTIMindtree has announced a major shift in its global talent strategy, with CEO Nachiket Deshpande confirming that the company will no longer file fresh H-1B visa applications. The decision marks a significant departure from long-standing industry practice, as Indian IT firms have historically relied heavily on H-1B workers to support U.S. delivery operations.

Deshpande explained that the company is increasingly prioritising local hiring, nearshore centres, and digital-first delivery models, reducing dependence on long-term onsite visas. He noted that the traditional pyramid model—where large numbers of junior engineers travel onsite for extended periods—no longer aligns with evolving customer expectations or the economics of modern project delivery.

Instead, LTIMindtree plans to expand its talent footprint in the U.S. through increased local recruitment, partnerships with colleges, and targeted reskilling programmes. The company is also strengthening nearshore hubs in Mexico, Canada, and Poland to meet client demand for timezone-aligned support.

Deshpande emphasised that this is not a retreat from the U.S. market but a strategic realignment driven by automation, generative AI, and the need for faster, more agile delivery. He added that existing H-1B employees will continue to be supported, but the future lies in a globally distributed workforce with minimal visa dependency.

Industry analysts say the move could signal a broader trend, as more IT majors reassess their reliance on the H-1B route amid tightening regulations, rising compliance costs, and increasing client preference for local teams.
