A Crime That Shook Maharashtra The brutal murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of a village in Maharashtra’s Beed district, sent shockwaves across the state, exposing a dark nexus between crime and politics. On December 9, Deshmukh was kidnapped, tortured for hours, and left for dead—a horrifying incident that uncovered an extortion racket linked to a top aide of state minister Dhananjay Munde. As the investigation unfolded, the political repercussions intensified, ultimately leading to Munde’s resignation amid growing public outrage. The Extortion Racket: A Deadly Web Beed and its neighboring districts have witnessed an economic surge due to the wind energy sector, attracting investments from companies like Avaada, a Mumbai-based green energy firm. However, this economic progress also invited criminal elements seeking to exploit the situation through extortion. In May last year, six months before Deshmukh’s murder, Sudarshan Ghule, the leader of a local crime syndicate, kidnapped Avaada’s project officer, Sunil Shinde, and later released him after a police complaint was filed. Police investigations later revealed that Vishnu Chate, another accused, had called Avaada officials at the behest of Dhananjay Munde’s close aide, Walmik Karad, demanding Rs 2 crore. They threatened the company with severe consequences if they refused to pay. Santosh Deshmukh: A Local Hero Who Stood Against Crime Deshmukh was a man of the people, deeply committed to his village’s welfare. He feared that extortion and criminal intimidation would drive away businesses like Avaada, negatively impacting local employment. Determined to protect his community, he intervened when Ghule and his associates assaulted Avaada employees on December 6. His actions put him in direct conflict with the extortionists. The accused saw Deshmukh as a major obstacle to their extortion plans and conspired to eliminate him. Karad, now identified as the mastermind, ordered Deshmukh’s murder. Despite multiple threats, Deshmukh refused to back down, sealing his tragic fate. A Murder Most Brutal On December 9, Deshmukh was abducted from Dongaon toll plaza in an SUV and taken to Kej taluka. He was subjected to unimaginable torture—beaten for over two hours with a gas pipe, iron rod, wooden sticks, and sharp weapons. The brutality was meticulously documented; police found 15 videos, eight photos, and two video calls made by the assailants. One particularly disturbing video showed Deshmukh being urinated upon as he bled heavily. Later that evening, he was found unconscious at Daithna Shivar and rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. The autopsy report confirmed that he had suffered extensive injuries due to prolonged torture. Political Fallout: The Minister Under Fire The murder case took a political turn when it was revealed that Walmik Karad, the prime accused, was a close associate of Dhananjay Munde, a senior NCP leader and Maharashtra Cabinet minister. As Karad’s role in the crime became evident, the Opposition launched a scathing attack on the government, demanding accountability. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) filed a 1,200-page chargesheet that added further fuel to the controversy. With chilling visuals from the chargesheet going viral on social media and news channels, the public outcry reached a tipping point. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis convened a high-level meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to assess the political ramifications. Under mounting pressure, Dhananjay Munde resigned from his ministerial post, citing personal distress and health reasons. However, many saw his resignation as a forced move to contain the political damage. Caste Politics and Its Role in the Case Beyond crime and politics, Deshmukh’s murder also reignited caste tensions in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region. The area has long been a battleground for Maratha and OBC Vanjari political rivalries, which played out in the recent Lok Sabha elections when BJP’s Pankaja Munde, a Vanjari, lost to NCP (SP)’s Maratha leader Bajrang Sonawane. Deshmukh, a Maratha, had actively campaigned for Pankaja Munde. His murder, allegedly orchestrated by Vanjari accused, added a caste dimension to the case, leading Maratha leaders, including BJP’s Suresh Dhasm, to demand justice and Munde’s resignation. Who is Dhananjay Munde? Dhananjay Munde’s political career has been tumultuous. Once mentored by his uncle and BJP stalwart Gopinath Munde, he was seen as a rising star within the BJP. However, a rift emerged when Gopinath Munde favored his daughter Pankaja for the Assembly seat in Parli, side-lining Dhananjay. This eventually led him to switch allegiance to the NCP, where he became a close confidant of Ajit Pawar. A powerful OBC leader, Munde has navigated several controversies in his career. However, his alleged indirect involvement in Deshmukh’s murder has presented the biggest challenge yet. Government's Attempt to Contain Damage Dhananjay Munde’s resignation marks a significant political moment in Maharashtra, highlighting the deep entanglement of crime and politics. The BJP-led government hopes that by forcing his exit, it can control the damage and prevent further polarization between Marathas and OBCs. However, questions remain. Will the resignation ease tensions, or will it deepen the political fault lines in Maharashtra? As the case progresses, it will test the government’s commitment to justice and law enforcement. More importantly, it will determine whether political patronage for criminal elements will finally be dismantled in Maharashtra’s power corridors. (With inputs from agencies)
