The United States has begun deploying military and charter flights to evacuate citizens as the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies. With regional stability deteriorating, the State Department issued a "depart now" order for Americans across 14 countries, including Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, and several Gulf nations.
The evacuation comes as commercial travel collapses; widespread flight cancellations and suspended routes have left many stranded following strikes on Iran. While an estimated 500,000 to one million Americans reside in the region, exact numbers are difficult to verify due to voluntary registration. Currently, the State Department is in direct contact with roughly 3,000 citizens seeking exit, while approximately 9,000 have already successfully returned home.
The logistical challenge remains immense. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem clarified that it is currently unable to facilitate evacuations from within Israel, forcing citizens to rely on remaining commercial options where operational. International allies, including France and the United Kingdom, have mirrored these actions, triggering their own contingency plans and urging citizens to register for emergency assistance.
As tensions rise, U.S. authorities are prioritizing the movement of citizens to safer transit hubs, though they warn that the window for assisted departure is narrowing as airspace becomes increasingly restricted.
