IndiGo Flight to Goa Makes Emergency Landing in Mumbai After Mid-Air Engine Failure

A Goa-bound IndiGo flight (6E 6271) from Delhi was forced to make an emergency landing at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 9:53 PM after experiencing a mid-air engine failure.

The Airbus A320neo aircraft, carrying 191 passengers, had taken off from Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi) and was en route to Manohar International Airport (Goa) when a technical issue occurred approximately 100 nautical miles north of Bhubaneswar.

Pilot Declares 'PAN PAN PAN' Before Emergency Landing

Before initiating the emergency landing, the flight crew declared a ‘PAN PAN PAN’ distress call—a standard aviation alert that signals an urgent but not life-threatening situation. Unlike a ‘Mayday’ call, which denotes immediate danger, the 'PAN PAN' alert informs Air Traffic Control (ATC) that the aircraft requires priority handling, such as cleared airspace and emergency preparedness on the ground.

An airport official confirmed that the malfunction was in engine number 1, prompting the precautionary measure.

IndiGo's Official Statement

In a statement, IndiGo Airlines described the issue as a "technical snag."

“A technical snag was detected on flight 6E 6271 while flying from Delhi to Goa on July 16. Following all standard operating procedures, the aircraft was diverted to Mumbai and landed safely,” the airline’s spokesperson said.

The affected aircraft is currently undergoing necessary checks and maintenance. Meanwhile, an alternate aircraft has been arranged to complete the journey to Goa.

All Passengers Safe

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and all passengers and crew members are safe. Emergency teams were on standby at Mumbai Airport, and the situation was handled efficiently, avoiding any panic onboard.
