Google has unveiled the next phase of AI integration in Gmail, aiming to reshape how nearly 3 billion users manage their inboxes. Powered by Gemini, the update transforms Gmail from a static mailbox into a smart, personalized command center.
The centerpiece is the new AI Inbox, an optional view that prioritizes what matters most. Emails are grouped into Suggested to-dos, highlighting messages that require action, and Catch me up, which summarizes key updates such as travel itineraries, reservations, purchases, and returns. The feature is currently rolling out to Trusted Testers, while the traditional inbox remains available.
Google is also enhancing discovery with AI Overviews in Gmail search. Users can now describe what they’re looking for in natural language and receive an AI-generated overview drawn solely from their inbox. Complementing this is Proofread, a writing refinement tool that improves grammar, tone, clarity, conciseness, and sentence structure. Both features are launching for G1 Ultra and Pro subscribers.
In a notable shift, Google is making several AI capabilities free for all users, including personalized Suggested Replies, AI thread summaries, and Help Me Write, which generates draft emails from a single prompt.
Collectively, these updates underscore Google’s strategy to make email more proactive, contextual, and intelligent—positioning Gmail as an always-on AI assistant for everyday communication.
